Freemark Abbey Viognier

Posted on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in California White, Domestic White, White, Wine

This wine has an appealing light straw color with greenish hues. In the aroma there are nuances of ripe banana, papaya, lemon-lime, mandarin, pear, honeydew melon and white peach. There is a subtle hint of angel food cake adding to the complexity of this immensely fruity and floral wine. Lively flavors of white peach compliment great balance and a wonderful richness in the mouth. A zesty finish leaves a fresh taste impression.

Wine Enthusiast

A beautiful Viognier that showcases the variety’s rich, exotic side. Offers a mouthburst of ripe grilled peaches, pineapples, green apples, honeysuckle and vanilla wrapped into a creamy, buttery texture. Try as an offbeat alternative to Chardonnay.

Score: 91. —Steve Heimoff, March 01, 2010.

La Follette Chardonnay

Posted on Wednesday, November 16, 2011 in California White, Domestic White, White, Wine

Fresh thyme, wood spice and honeydew melon commingle with musk notes in the heady bouquet. Citrus acids on entry, with a concentrated palate of nectarine and lemon curd, set against good minerality. With time in the glass, the musk and pungent tropical fruits are amplified. Multi-layered and balanced, the acid persists through the long finish.

Managed by third-generation farmers, brothers Mike and Steve Sangiacomo, this vineyard benefits from a daily stream of cool air pulled inland from the San Pablo Bay. Planted in 1998, the Roberts Road block is rooted in an ancient footprint of Copeland Creek, providing alluvial soils with tracks of gravel. We work with the excellent Old Wente Chardonnay clone from this site, where the fruit is picked and pre-sorted under the light rigs of the Sangiacomos’ night harvesting team

The fruit really shines in the mid-palate. Bananas and pineapples are prominent, along with a bit of fresh granny smith apple. Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay

VINEYARDS Beringer’s northernmost Chardonnay vineyards, Gamble Ranch and Yountville Vineyard, are located near the town of Yountville, where daytime temperatures slowly climb as the cooling morning fog recedes south to San Pablo Bay. This significant diurnal shift allows the grapes to maintain their acidity, which is essential to balancing the ripe, rich flavors they develop during warm afternoons. As harvest approached, winemaker Laurie Hook and vineyard manager Drew Johnson identified the blocks and rows that had reserve potential. Laurie walked the vineyards each morning during harvest, tasting grapes to ensure they were picked at the peak of their bright fruit flavors.

WINEMAKING
To retain the brightness of the flavors, each Chardonnay lot was kept separate throughout the aging process. After sending the fruit directly to press, winemaker Laurie Hook fermented the juice in French oak barrels (62 percent new) to enhance the natural richness in the wine. Weekly lees stirring enhanced the toasty notes, and integrated the oak flavors for an overall balance. All of the wines were put through malolactic fermentation to encourage a lush creaminess. After 9 months aging, Winemaker Laurie chose the most expressive lots and blended them to create a richly layered wine featuring flavors of citrus, baked pear, hints of minerality and a creamy mouthfeel.

WINEMAKER COMMENTS
“A good portion of the 2007 blend is from Gamble Ranch, a vineyard that has consistently delivered such rich, ripe fruit flavors. There’s a richness in this wine that is wonderfully balanced by a bright citrus note. A sweet oak note weaves together the many layers of aroma and flavor, carrying through to the finish. This wine is always a pleasure to make and equally pleasurable to drink!’ – Laurie Hook, Beringer Vineyards Winemaker
