winemaker’s notes:

#58 Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2011

The 2009 Catena Malbec presents a dark, violet color with deep black tones. This microclimate blend of four unique vineyard sites offers intense aromas with a soft generous texture and concentrated flavors. Angelica vineyard lends ripe plum and chocolate flavors with a very soft, supple mouthfeel. Altamira vineyard brings a core of black currant and cassis, with excellent structure and length. La Piramide vineyard offers blackberry fruit with a slight earthy tone and notes of spicy black pepper. Finally, the Adrianna vineyard lends exceptional concentration with explosive floral aromatics. Together they give birth to a complex blend of aromas and flavors – a wine with excellent concentration, balance and freshness.

alcohol by volume: 14.0%
critical acclaim:

“A rich red, with ripe layers of linner torte, plum pudding and fig paste flavors backed by notes of mesquite, olive paste and grilled herbs. Grippy tannins add weight to the long, vibrant finish. Drink now through 2013. 75,000 cases imported.”

Seasons South African Selection this Friday Night Flights 12/16/11

Posted on Friday, December 16, 2011 in Uncategorized, Wine 101

We hope you will stop by this Friday Night for a taste of 3 of our favorite wines from South Africa

 Fleur Du Cap Chardonnay

This Chardonnay displays beautiful toast aroma on the nose with hints of apricot, melon and citrus fruit. It is dry with a well balanced weight and fullness that demands attention. A zesty palate packed with apricot and citrus fruit flavour is supported by lovely nut, butterscotch and vanilla oak nuances. The flavour gains intensity in the mouth with a fascinating long finish

Faithful Hound Red Blend

41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Petit Verdot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 9% Merlot, 4% Malbec Raise a glass to man’s best friend with this delicious Bordeaux blend, created as a tribute to Boes (“Bushy” in Afrikaans), the loyal dog that kept watch over Mulderbosch farm for three years after his owner’s death. Supple and elegant, it displays intense flavors of blackberry, cherry, coffee, and licorice, with notes of tobacco, herbs, and spice

Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz

Jam Jar Sweet Shiraz was born out of the realization that there are not a lot of options available to consumers seeking quality sweet red wine. This fresh, fruity, semi-sweet Shiraz aims to fill that void. Most of the grapes are grown in Paarl, a region with a Rhône-like climate that is ideal for Shiraz cultivation, and production is overseen by critically acclaimed winemaker Bruwer Raats.

Jam Jar is sweet perfection…Simple, pure and honest

Toasted coconut shavings, butter and spicy oak on the long, smooth finish

Moderate tannins lead to a soft, silky, lingering finish, beckoning you back for more.

Beaujolais, Brownies and Bordeaux Event!

At one past midnight on the third Thursday of each November, from little villages
and towns like Romanèche-Thorins, over a million cases of Beaujolais Nouveau
begin their journey through a sleeping France to Paris for immediate shipment
to all parts of the world. Banners proclaim the good news: Le Beaujolais
Nouveau est arrivé! “The New Beaujolais has arrived!” One of the most
frivolous and animated rituals in the wine world has begun.

We hope you will join us as we taste the 2011 vintage as it coincides with the
arrival of the 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau, a fresh and fruity red
wine made from the local Gamay grape. The 2011 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau,
with a first-ever graffiti-inspired label designed by renowned Brooklyn artist
“Kaves”. Nouveau is a very popular
wine for serving during the holidays; its ripe berry aromas and flavors are
food-friendly and versatile with many dishes .

Georges Duboeuf has declared the 2011 vintage to be terrific: “2011 will be a great millésime in Beaujolais – complex, serious, solid and rich in delicious flavors. There is something divine about it. It is like nature has granted, under the sunshine of April, June and August, a dazzling body.”  According to Duboeuf, the wine is very deep purple with aromas of ripe wild strawberries, red and black currants, blueberries and a slight touch of peach. The palate is voluptuous and full bodied, enriched by well-rounded yet lively tannins.

In addition to the beaujolais nouveau, we will be tasting the Mouton Cadet white Bordeaux and red Bordeaux.

Lastly, to make this more of a celebration – we will serve chocolate brownies from Daisy’s!!

Beaujolais, Brownies and Bordeaux OH MY!

Mouton Cadet, the world’s first French wine brand created in 1930, celebrates 80 years of history, boldness and passion in 2010. Since its first vintage, the wines of Mouton Cadet have stood for not only quality and tradition, but also innovation.

Brilliant pale yelllow. The nose opens on a complex mixture of boxwood, broom, blackcurrant bud and lime blossom, gradually evolving towards citrus fruit, especially pink grapefruit. The attack, beautifully balanced between body and freshness, leads into a round and smooth mid-palate on notes of citrus and white blossom. The wine displays fine length on the palate, with an attractive and highly elegant return of fruit flavors on the finish.
